Working with GMCI

GMCI is a technology transfer and commercialization program that works with a selected number of small businesses in the technology sector that can benefit from our business and technology services. GMCI provides these services to companies for up to one year at no cost. Typically, GMCI works with small businesses that have the following characteristics:

  • Already collaborating with or interested in partnering with NASA to
    • Accelerate the development of their technology, or
    • Acquire or develop a new technology
  • Need technical or business resources to help develop a model, validate a process, or resolve a technical problem with a technology
  • Would benefit from Federal funding to support the prototype development or test and evaluation of their technology

GMCI’s participation criteria

GMCI uses the following criteria to help determine eligibility for program participation:

  • Small business or small disadvantaged business focused on the technology sector
  • Company is located or conducting significant business in our geographical footprint – i.e. the Midwest, Southeast and Northeast regions of the U.S.
  • Company is developing a technology that can benefit from:
    • Technology - technology transfer to or from NASA
    • Expertise – ability to leverage subject matter technical expertise (or know-how) or test and evaluation facilities at NASA to improve or validate a technology
    • Programs – identification and/or participation in programs (such as SBIR/STTR) or procurement opportunities at NASA to help further the development of a technology
  • Willingness to fully participate in GMCI evaluations, which will include regular assessment of progress and economic impact from the services received

GMCI Process

The GMCI process of acceptance and full program participation can be distilled to these five steps:

  1. Submit an Application – In order to be considered for participation, the GMCI online application must be completed by the company to help give us an understanding of your company and your technology needs. Apply.
  2. Initial Interview – After receiving your online application, GMCI will contact the company by telephone or request to meet in person to discuss the content of your application and help determine whether or not the company needs can be met by GMCI services.
  3. Assessment Meeting – For companies whose needs can be met through the GMCI program, an assessment meeting will be scheduled to determine the deliverable(s) that will be part of the action plan created for the company.
  4. Implementation – A member(s) of the GMCI team will work with the small business to help implement items in the action plan and monitor the progress of the company against the deliverables in the action plan.
  5. Closing Meeting – When the deliverables are all achieved or when the expiration date in the action plan is reached (whichever deadline happens the earliest), then GMCI will schedule a closeout meeting to survey the company and prepare the company to make the transition from our services to their next stage of development.
